Adventures of a Railway Nomad : How Our Journeys Guide Us Home

Description

One August morning, I walked out of my Seville home taking nothing but a small, roll-aboard bag, a EuRail pass, and my husband. We were traveling with no fixed time limit, no reservations, and only a loose idea of our itinerary. Our goal was to see if we could still have the kind of spontaneous adventures we'd enjoyed in our youth. We spent three months on trains, mostly in Eastern Europe, and the results - often hilarious, occasionally harrowing, definitely life-changing - form the basis of my new book, Adventures of a Railway Nomad: How Our Journeys Guide Us Home.

'Malala is an inspiration to girls and women all over the world.' - J.K. Rowling Written by Malala in collaboration with critically acclaimed author, Patricia McCormick, this children's edition tells the remarkable story of a girl who knew from a young age that she wanted to change the Adventures of a Railway Nomad : How Our Journeys Guide Us Home ebook pdf world - and did. Her journey will open your eyes to another world and will make you believe in hope, truth, miracles, and the determination of one person to inspire change. Raised in a once-peaceful area of Pakistan transformed by terrorism, Malala was taught to stand up for what she believes. So she fought for her right to be educated. And on 9 October, 2012, she nearly lost her life for the cause. She was shot point-blank on her way home from school. No one expected her to survive. Now, she is an international symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Equality of opportunity in Irish education was promulgated as a national aim in 1916. The purpose of this study is to trace the trajectory of this objective in the first eighty-five years of the Irish State. While the goal of equality of opportunity was reiterated Coding Theory and Quantum Computing : An International Conference on Coding Theory and Qauntum Computing, May 20-24, 2003, University of Virginia download epub throughout, the rhetoric has not been matched by the reality. Weaknesses in the policy formation process itself have been identified, most particularly a reluctance on the part of successive administrations to prioritise the needs and rights of children and young people over those of vested interests, and an unwillingness to introduce rigorous and transparent mechanisms for the assessment of system performance. However, the evidence suggests that the primary reason for the failure to achieve the objective is a lack of political will and leadership on the issue.

Coding Theory and Quantum Computing : An International Conference on Coding Theory and Qauntum Computing, May 20-24, 2003, University of Virginia

Description

A conference, 'Coding Theory and Quantum Computing', was held in Charlottesville, VA, to provide an opportunity for computer scientists, mathematicians, and physicists to interact about subjects of common interest. This proceedings volume grew out of that meeting. It is divided into two parts: 'Coding Theory' and 'Quantum Computing'. In the first part, Harold Ward gives an introduction to coding theory. Other papers survey recent important work, such as coding theory applications of Grobner bases, methods of computing parameters of codes corresponding to algebraic curves, and problems in the theory of designs. The second part of the book covers a wide variety of directions in quantum information with an emphasis on understanding entanglement. The material presented is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in coding theory and in quantum computing.

Gregory Maguire: Egg & Spoon

Egg & Spoon

Description

In this tour de force, master storyteller Gregory Maguire offers a dazzling novel for fantasy lovers of all ages. Elena Rudina lives in the impoverished Russian countryside. Her father has been dead for years. One of her brothers has been conscripted into the Tsar's army, the other taken as a servant in the house of the local landowner. Her mother is dying, slowly, in their tiny cabin. And there is no food. But then a train arrives in the village, a train carrying untold wealth, a cornucopia of food, and a noble family destined to visit the Tsar in Saint Petersburg -- a family that includes Ekaterina, a girl of Elena's age. When the two girls' lives collide, an adventure is set in motion, an escapade that includes mistaken identity, a monk locked in a tower, a prince traveling incognito, and -- in a starring role only Gregory Maguire could have conjured -- Baba Yaga, witch of Russian folklore, in her ambulatory house perched on chicken legs.

All the bowing and meditating and wood-chopping that is part and parcel of her retreat is hardly first nature, but the good-humored and tenacious Dobisz is able to adapt, and to relate her hundred days with moving insight and humanity. Her "Solitude" in fact offers us all a chance to commune with her and to look inside and rediscover our own grace. The pioneering contribution to infant psychology that gave us separation and individuation documents with standard-setting care the intrapsychic process of a child's emergence from symbiotic fusion with the mother toward affirmation of his own psychological birth. Available for the first time in paperback to a new generation of students and clinicians on the twenty-fifth anniversary of its original publication. Louie the dog has just had a bath - and he is NOT happy about it. He smells all wrong. Determined to get his Special Smell back, he goes on a hunt for it and meets lots of smelly things along the way - a fox, some interesting dustbins and a marvellously Egg & Spoon pdf muddy puddle to roll in. Will he succeed in getting his smell back? And, more importantly, will he be able to keep it this time ...? Catherine Rayner is the Kate Greenaway Medal-winning creator of Solomon Crocodile and Ernest. Smelly Louie is full of her trademark humour and richly textured artwork. This funny canine tale will be a sure-fire hit with children and adults alike.

The Baker's Blood

Description

1775. Commissioner Nicolas Le Floch is on a diplomatic mission to Vienna, ostensibly to deliver a bust of Marie Antoinette to her mother, the Empress Maria Theresa. His real task, however, is to investigate the breakdown of French secret intelligence in Austria. The city is a hotbed of plotting - and Nicolas only just survives an attempt on his life. On his return to France, Paris is in turmoil. The soaring price of grain and bread is causing widespread social unrest, and Nicolas' first police case is the unexplained death of a baker. Could it be that events in the French capital are somehow connected to his experiences in Vienna...?

The one person who, against his will, holds the most sacred part of him: his heart. But if he doesn't kill Kateri, the deadliest of evils will reemerge and destroy everyone else on the planet. It was a sacrifice he made once. Will he be able to make it again? Sweet-tart lime. Bright cherry. Creamy vanilla. From celebrity and news magazines to TV programs to Facebook pages and mommy blogs, family-building successes are routinely and glowingly shared and celebrated. But where are the voices of those who are unable to have children? In relating what happens when nature and science find their limits, Silent Sorority examines a seldom acknowledged outcome and raises provocative, often uncomfortable questions usually reserved for late night reflection or anonymous blogging. Outside of the physical reckoning there lies the challenge of moving forward in The Baker's Blood download PDF a society that doesn't know how to handle the awkwardness of infertility. With no Emily Post-like guidelines for supporting couples who can't conceive, most well-intentioned "fertile" people miss the mark. Silent Sorority offers an unflinching and insightful look at what it's like to be barren in an era of designer babies and helicopter parents. Silent Sorority received the 2010 Team RESOLVE Choice Award for Best Book.

An Assembly Such as This: A Novel of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman

Description

He's the fascinating romantic lead in what is perhaps the most enduringly popular novel in the English language. Yet Jane Austen reveals tantalizingly little about him, nor does she ever give readers insight into his take on the action of the book. And so the question has long remained: who is Fitzwilliam Darcy? In the Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy, Pamela Aidan vividly imagines the world of Fitzwilliam Darcy- a world of which Jane Austen offers only a few tantalizing glimpses in Pride & Prejudice. In An Assembly Such as This-the first book of her trilogy-which culminates with the disastrous ball at Netherfield Park, Aidan allows us to see the Bennets and the Bingleys through Darcy's eyes. As we learn about his complicated past, we begin to understand how such a seemingly arrogant man could be transformed into Elizabeth's ideal husband. Set vividly against the colorful historical and political background of Regency England, Aidan adds her own characters to Pride and Prejudice's beloved cast, weaving a rich tapestry from Darcy's past and present that will leave readers on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the next installment of the trilogy.

Philosophers without Gods: Meditations on Atheism and the Secular Life

Description

Atheists are frequently demonized as arrogant intellectuals, antagonistic to religion, devoid of moral sentiments, advocates of an "anything goes" lifestyle. Now, in this revealing volume, nineteen leading philosophers open a window on the inner life of atheism, shattering these common stereotypes as they reveal how they came to turn away from religious belief. These highly engaging personal essays capture the marvelous diversity to be found among atheists, providing a portrait that will surprise most readers. Many of the authors, for example, express great affection for particular religious traditions, even as they explain why they cannot, in good conscience, embrace them. None of the contributors dismiss religious belief as stupid or primitive, and several even express regret that they cannot, or can no longer, believe. Perhaps more important, in these reflective pieces, they offer fresh insight into some of the oldest and most difficult problems facing the human mind and spirit. For instance, if God is dead, is everything permitted? Philosophers without Gods demonstrates convincingly, with arguments that date back to Plato, that morality is independent of the existence of God. Indeed, every writer in this volume adamantly affirms the objectivity of right and wrong. Moreover, they contend that secular life can provide rewards as great and as rich as religious life. A naturalistic understanding of the human condition presents a set of challenges-to pursue our goals without illusions, to act morally without hope of reward-challenges that can impart a lasting value to finite and fragile human lives. Collectively, these essays highlight the richness of atheistic belief-not only as a valid alternative to religion, but as a profoundly fulfilling and moral way of life. "This Atheists R Us compilation differs markedly in tone from Hitchens and Dawkins. A-10 Thunderbolt II Units of Operation Enduring Freedom, 2002-07 download pdf

Gary Wetzel,Jim Laurier: A-10 Thunderbolt II Units of Operation Enduring Freedom, 2002-07

A-10 Thunderbolt II Units of Operation Enduring Freedom, 2002-07

Description

The A-10 was never a favourite amongst the USAF's senior staff, and prior to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 they had attempted to transfer the aircraft to the US Army and Marine Corps. Reprieved from premature retirement, the A-10 would see combat in the Balkans during the mid-1990s and over Iraq in Operations Northern Watch and Southern Watch until Operation Iraqi Freedom began in 2003. Following the 11 September 2001 attacks in the United States, the Bush administration responded with the instigation of Operation Enduring Freedom. A-10 aircraft first entered the fray during Operation Anaconda in March 2002. During Anaconda four A-10s flying from Pakistan provided 21 straight hours of FAC (A)/CAS coverage. The untold story of the A-10 in Enduring Freedom will be explored and presented as never before through first hand interviews and photography from those involved, along with official military achieves. This title is the first of three planned covering the combat experience of the USAF's A-10 Thunderbolt II units. Follow-on volumes will examine the role of the Warthog during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"" Bayport's leading bully, Adam Ackerman, seems to be the prime suspect. But when he proves that he wasn't the bicycle thief, everyone turns out to be a potential culprit--even Mr. Mack's dog, Lucy! Can Frank and Joe crack the case and bring Frank's bicycle home? Using Cline's own telegrams, letters, and reports, the testimony of scores of survivors, and our latest understanding of the science of hurricanes, Erik Larson builds a chronicle of one man's heroic struggle and fatal miscalculation in the face of a storm of unimaginable magnitude. Riveting, powerful, and unbearably suspenseful, Isaac's Storm is the story of what can happen when human arrogance meets the great uncontrollable force of nature. For over twenty years, psychologist Richard Wiseman has examined the quirky science A-10 Thunderbolt II Units of Operation Enduring Freedom, 2002-07 download epub of everyday life. In Quirkology, he navigates the oddities of human behavior, explaining the tell-tale signs that give away a liar, the secret science behind speed-dating and personal ads, and what a person's sense of humor reveals about the innermost workings of his or her mind--all along paying tribute to others who have carried out similarly weird and wonderful work. Wiseman's research has involved secretly observing people as they go about their daily business, conducting unusual experiments in art exhibitions and music concerts, and even staging fake seances in allegedly haunted buildings. With thousands of research subjects from all over the world, including enamored couples, unwitting pedestrians, and guileless dinner guests, Wiseman presents a fun, clever, and unexpected picture of the human mind.

Magic for Nothing download pdf

Seanan McGuire: Magic for Nothing

Magic for Nothing

Description

Improbable, adjective:                 1.            Not very likely to happen; not probable.                 2.            Probably not a very good idea anyway.                 3.            See also “bad plan.”                   As the youngest of the three Price children, Antimony is used to people not expecting much from her.  She’s been happy playing roller derby and hanging out with her cousins, leaving the globe-trotting to her older siblings while she stays at home and tries to decide what she wants to do with her life.  She always knew that one day, things would have to change.  She didn’t think they’d change so fast.                 Annie’s expectations keep getting shattered.  She didn’t expect Verity to declare war on the Covenant of St. George on live television.  She didn’t expect the Covenant to take her sister’s threat seriously.  And she definitely didn’t expect to be packed off to London to infiltrate the Covenant from the inside…but as the only Price in her generation without a strong resemblance to the rest of the family, she’s the perfect choice to play spy.  They need to know what’s coming.  Their lives may depend on it.                 But Annie has some secrets of her own, like the fact that she’s started setting things on fire when she touches them, and has no idea how to control it.  Now she’s headed halfway around the world, into the den of the enemy, where blowing her cover could get her killed.  She’s pretty sure things can’t get much worse.                 Antimony Price is about to learn just how wrong it’s possible for one cryptozoologist to be.

In 1919 a group of young men barely out of their teens, poorly armed, with no money and little training, renewed the fight, begun in 1916, to drive the British out of Ireland. Dan Breen was to become the best known of them. At first they were condemed on all sides. They became outlaws and My Fight describes graphically what life was like 'on the run,' with 'an army at one's heels and a thousand pounds on one's head'. A burning belief in their cause sustained them through many a dark and bitter day and slowly support came from the people. This exciting collection of fables, folktales, and poems, collected by William J. Bennett, illustrates some of the best human values: courage, honesty, work, friendship, and loyalty. When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana's The Rose and the Beast: Fairy Tales Retold free ebook quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too--but on his own terms.

The Rose and the Beast: Fairy Tales Retold

Description

With language that is both lyrical and distinctly her own, Francesca Lia Block turns nine fairy tales inside out.Escaping the poisoned apple, Snow frees herself from possession to find the truth of love in an unexpected place.A club girl from L.A., awakening from a long sleep to the memories of her past, finally finds release from its curse. And Beauty learns that Beasts can understand more than men.Within these singular, timeless landscapes, the brutal and the magical collide, and the heroine triumphs because of the strength she finds in a pen, a paintbrush, a lover, a friend, a mother, and finally, in herself.

Alexander Kent: Sloop of War

Sloop of War

Description

For the young Richard Bolitho the spring of 1778 marked a complete transformation for himself and his future. It was the year in which the American War of Independence changed to an all-out struggle for freedom from British rule - and the year when Bolitho took command of the Sparrow, a small, fast and well-armed sloop of war. As the pace of war increased, the Sparrow was called from one crisis to another - and when the great fleets of Britain and France convened on the Chesapeake, Bolitho had to throw aside the early dreams of his first command to find maturity in a sea battle that might decide the fate of a whole continent.

Luke Pearson, author of Hildafolk, Hilda and the Midnight Giant, and Everything We Sloop of War download epub Miss has fast become one of the leading talents of the United Kingdom comics scene, garnering rave reviews from the prestigious Times and Observer newspapers and winning the Young People's Comic Award at the 2012 British Comic Awards for Hilda and the Midnight Giant. Never leave a bug behind! Church. Warmly recommended.” By the age of eight, Jamie Oliver was already cooking in his parents' pub and restaurant in Essex. From Westminster Catering College, he went straight to the apron strings of Antonio Carluccio as his head pastry chef. Spotted in the kitchens of "The River Cafe", Jamie's cheeky chappy image won him his own TV series, "The Naked Chef", by the tender age of 22. A monster advertising deal with Sainsbury's was soon to follow, allowing Jamie and his mates - strewn through his series as effortlessly as he chucked herbs on his easy dishes - to come into our sitting rooms several times a night. We watched him marry his sweetheart, become a father twice, and chewed our fingernails with Jools in "Jamie's School Dinners", willing him to come home more often. His latest campaign," Jamie's Fowl Dinners", highlights the animal welfare implications for chickens of our constant demand for cheap food. The story of Jamie Oliver is the story of a culinary revolution.
